The Browns

Their Story

We came to know of Mr. Brown via Sojourn Carlisle.  Mr. Brown is blind and that makes home upkeep challenging in many ways.  Just imaging cleaning what you cannot see.  Add to that the financial pressure of upkeep on a home built in 1947.

Through a community group at Sojourn Carlisle we were made aware that their home had holes in the flooring, we later found out that Mrs. Brown had fallen into the hole twice and almost had to call EMS once to get out.

What We Did

We were able to work with the Deaconess of Mercy and Missions at Sojourn Carlisle and the Daughter of the Browns to inspect the issues in the home and come up with a plan to fix the life and safety concerns in the kitchen. We wanted to leave the kitchen better than we found it aesthetically but our primary concern was the safety of the floor. Being this is their kitchen, we at most had a single day to finish so that they could have access the same day.

We cut out the broken and rotted flooring, re-enforced the joists with new bracing and installed new sub-flooring to cover the 4 holes that we found. We then installed new flooring tiles.

The project took us 6 hours on a Saturday and $120.25 in supplies.

Who we are

We are a group of Men at Sojourn J-Town who want to use our abilities to help those in need.  At the moment none of us are carpenters or tradesmen, but we do have limited abilities and want to apply those where in need.

On this Job a special thanks to Nick, Greg, and Beren for the work and our donor who funded the project.

Please note: Because of the sensitive nature of some of the projects the names may or may not be real, and no photographs of the people in involved were taken or will be included.
